Teach Yourself

TEACH YOURSELF! Lots of people often say to me, “I wish I could sew.” My reply is, if you can read, you can sew! Did you know that patterns (those little pieces of printed tissue paper in an envelope) come with just about all the instruction – and pictures – you need to make a garment?! When you go to a fabric store, there are usually places where you can sit down and look through books of patterns. The coinciding actual patterns can be found in designated drawers, filed by pattern numbers. On the front of the envelope is a line drawing or an actual picture of a model, wearing the completed garment you hope to make. On the back of the envelope you’ll find yardages of fabric needed to complete your garment (listed according to size), suggested fabrics, notions needed (those the little incidentals that complete the garment – thread, number of buttons, size of zipper, etc.), and even suggested TYPES of fabrics that would be suitable for your choice. On the inside of the envelope is a step-by-step guide WITH PICTURES as to how to construct your garment. I promise – if you can read, you can sew! For more detailed directions, I just discovered a very informative book that I highly recommend. I purchased mine at the Hobby Lobby. It’s entitled: First Time Sewing – The Absolute Beginner’s Guide by the Editors of Creative Publishing International © 2014. Check it out.
